Right, now we are ready to start developing our site!

(This section explains the name of our site and thus hopefully also the importance of this section!)

'Keywords' is the term that is used to describe the words a person would use to find that site on Search Engines like Google etc. They are incredibly important for any site.

Deciding on your Keywords is the first step in creating content for your site. Identifying keywords related to your content should be the first priority when creating web content. The quality of these keywords is critical for good, constant traffic.

Researching the right keywords for your website is critical to ensure that when people perform a search for a particular keyword/phrase they will be able to find your site.

Needless to say, you need to have your content ready. By this I mean that you have to know what copy (text) will appear on your site. If you don't, how will you know what keywords best describe your site? Lol (lol is short for "laugh out loud')

Anyway, follow the following couple of steps and you will be on the road to natural Search Engine traffic!

A) Keyword research

Essentially there are 3 different ways to find the best keywords for your site:

  • Take some time and think about all the keywords you would type into a Search Engine to find your site. The words you would use to get to your site. Write these down in a spreadsheet.
  • The next thing is to do is to get your friends, family and even customers (if you have some) to stipulate which words they would use to get to your site. Everybody searches differently and this is incredibly valuable in deciding what keywords other people think of. Write these down as well.
  • Keyword suggestion tools. There are literally 100's of Keyword generating tools on the web. The problem is finding the good ones. Some are free of charge and others charge a fee.

The best Free ones are:

The best paid for service is MicroNicheFinder by a mile.

You can decide which works best for you, but I can strongly suggest spending a little money and making use of MicroNicheFinder !

All you have to do is simply type in your keyword and phrases it will show how many times those words/phrases have been searched for on the web. MicroNicheFinder will also help you to find how much competition is there is for the particular word/phrase. If there is a large amount of competition, it might be worthwhile to select another primary keyword or phrase.

Write these down in our spreadsheet as well.

We are now ready to start selecting the keywords/phrases we want to use. We have a spreadsheet with a number of keywords and from this we can select the most favorable ones. If the words appears in all three columns we have a winner.

It is always good to select a number of keywords/phrases that you wish to use and not just one or two.

As I said before Always remember it is best to choose less competitive words/phrases. Rather than choosing 'dog', you might want to choose a term like 'dog lovers' for argument sake.

We can now start constructing our website content with the identified keywords.

B) Keyword placement

The placing of our new found keywords is just as important as finding the right ones! The keywords need to appear as often as possible, without overdoing it or even worse, doing it in such a way that your site text/layout doesn't make sense!

Use your keywords/phrases as much as possible in text and especially in your headings.

Also try to use them as your Alt text for images. This is simply an html term that is used when creating the page. It allows text to appear while you are waiting for a graphic to download ore for people to view that have images 'turned off' on their pc's. Good trick though!

You will also add them in your Meta Tags quite substantially! Meta Tags will be discussed in the next page. (Step 5)

C) Keyword density

Keyword Density is the amount of times a specific keyword such as "money" is repeated in the text of a web site page.

Search engine robots are very intelligent and can determine who is trying to trick them. Some webmasters and SEO experts use keyword spamming or keyword dumping (adding extra keywords). If search engine spiders realizes that a specific word is used 'a stupid' number of times they will penalize you! Thus, Keyword density is very important.

An ideal density would be anything between 10-15 % on any particular page.

Lastly, always try to place the keywords/phrases right across the entire web page and not concentrate them in one spot.

At this stage you website content should be ready and should start to get it on the web!

Point to consider : Please remember that nothing stops you from building a site around a number of keywords and/or phrases. Makes you think, doesn't it.
